The Single Biggest Mistake You Can Make In Network Marketing by John Murphy

The Single Biggest Mistake You Can Make In Network Marketing by John Murphy

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Guess what! Every single day, millions of people in the MLM business make the same huge mistake. No, it isn’t some marketing tactic or recruiting secret or even anything actually to do with network marketing. The single biggest mistake you can make in your network marketing business is to rationalize your lack of productivity and success with the excuse that you are somehow different from everybody else—that somehow your situation is different.

For example, growing up, I knew I was always a little heavier than the other kids, but it never held me back at anything. And, I slimmed down in high school.  It wasn’t until two years ago that I looked in the mirror and finally realized that I had been literally fat!  Prior to this single look in the mirror, I had always rationalized that, “I was just a bigger guy.” Somehow, diet and exercise just didn’t work for me. I believed I was just different from everybody else and somehow that justified my being heavy. See, the biggest mistake I was making was rationalizing that I was different than everybody else. This somehow served as a justification that exempted me from accountability.

Similarly, network marketers often create some self serving story to rationalize and justify why they are in their present situation and simply cannot succeed in their businesses like those magical people in the industry making the big bucks and living ideal lifestyles. Many individuals quit on themselves every day, saying things like, “That business does not work for me.”

This belief that you or I are somehow different and therefore exempt from accountability seems to only exist in the Western world. Think of this for a second--the average person worldwide lives on two U.S. dollars a day!   What??? People in Africa know for a fact that if they want to eat, they have to work!  If they want fresh water, they are going to have to boil some. Considering this perspective, if you live in the free world, you have already won the jackpot of life.  The reality is in the Western world, life is too easy.  It is easy to stay comfortable by just being average.  As a result, people often stay in their own comfort zones and then rationalize why they are not more successful.

So, are these individuals who rationalize and justify their lack of success really different? No. They just haven’t come to the realization that the truth of the matter is we are all basically pretty much the same.

For me, correcting my mistaken thinking and getting back on track started by realizing I had failed to see what was possible because I thought I was different! I had to come to understand that I was not any different than that guy who is healthy and fit.  It started by making the decision daily to go to the gym.  It started by making the decision daily to throw away unhealthy foods and stick with what I knew was health.  It was simply showing up daily, doing what works, and sticking to my plan that was right in front of me my entire life.

Like me, you can change your thinking and use this same approach in your network marketing venture to achieve success. So, stop making the single biggest mistake you can make in MLM. Stop rationalizing mediocrity or failure by believing you’re different somehow! Realize what you have in front of you and roll up your sleeves. If you figure out the basics and stick to your plan, you will eventually get the results you want. If you stay focused on what you want for long enough, and are willing to make the sacrifices to reach these goals, you will get them.
