Goals: A New Approach to Make it Happen

goals

It’s the time of year when we review all that we accomplished and those things we still want to accomplish. As the New Year dawns you may have had a desire to make goals but felt hesitant. This year can be different, but something must change in the process. Undoubtedly there are things we all of us want to change. Many people in direct selling are natural goal setters. If you are not a natural goal oriented person or if you are and there is a goal that eludes you, then we have some expert tips for you.

Here are the most popular New Year’s Resolutions:

  • Lose weight
  • Getting organized
  • Spend less, save more
  • Enjoy life to the fullest
  • Stay fit & healthy
  • Help others accomplish their dreams
  • Fall in love
  • Spend more time with loved ones

Change can be healthy but you may want to choose a different approach this year. Avoid setting yourself up for failure. To help you in this, we’ve collected these helpful tips and videos to create your personal growth for the coming year. Knowledgeable change experts may help you find success in the upcoming days, weeks, and months!

Meaningful change

  • Create tiny habits
  • Don’t focus on your goal, focus on behaviors
  • Find systems & technologies to support you

Did you notice that we did not begin with the old standby of writing your goals down, and reviewing them constantly? We also didn’t mention self-motivation. Our list of tips comes from the research of Dr. BJ Fogg.

Fogg founded the Persuasive Technology Lab at Stanford University, where he directs research and design. In addition, he devotes at least half his time to industry projects and innovations, all of which focus on using technology to change behaviors in positive ways. For insight into his suggested process for behavior change, check out his Ted Talk.

His focus is on creating tiny habits triggered by your existing behavior. His research shows that goals to floss every day for a month are more easily accomplished to a higher degree than goals to floss every day for the rest of your natural life, but that in order to make that habit last for a lifetime starting tiny makes the real difference. In fact, someone who has a smaller and more easily accomplished goal has more of a chance of making the habit last a lifetime.

Action not objective

You may be thinking, “My goals are bigger than just small and tiny habit changes.” When you reach toward big goals, the actual desire inside you is the desire to become a top performer, whether in life or in work. The methods used by top performers (from direct selling leaders to sport heroes) tend to follow similar logic. The best thing to do, in order to achieve the biggest goals, might be to avoid focusing on them.

In this Ted Talk former Denver Broncos running back Reggie Rivers discusses how focusing on your goals is the one sure way not to achieve them. He explains through storytelling that focusing on your behaviors is how you can achieve great goals.

Reggie Rivers has several positive suggestions on how to create happy healthy behaviors.

Focus on behaviors that are in your control, like consistency, integrity, and your response to every situation. Make a realistic goal that you know you can achieve. Write down the behaviors you plan to put into action for the day and the week—behaviors that you know will get you closer to your goal. Take the time to think, “I’m proud of myself. I’m happy that I did it today.”

Keeping track

Keep these insights in mind as you work on your resolutions, but you might also feel the need for a good system of keeping track of your progress and your goals themselves. We suggest using the tools you have readily available to you. You may start a journal, or keep track on a calendar. But if you have a smart phone there are many options available to you for tracking your progress. You can empower yourself with technology quickly and effectively.

Technology companies like Google, Facebook, and Twitter are consistently finding ways for you to use technology and apps to make your life easier and better. Here are a few you may want to try out as you work toward your goals.
