Technology Spotlight: Fiverr
As an internet marketer, I am constantly looking at the latest trends and tools that can help me make sure my marketing campaigns—conveyed through web pages, downloadable documents, business cards, and other branded materials—perform at their finest. In 2009, I was telling a co-worker that the business cards I had ordered through our in-house designer were several weeks late. He recommended a new site called Fiverr where freelancers produce such materials. Viewing the page, I was instantly impressed by the promised turnaround times.
I purchased what was called a gig—Fiverr’s term for a service provided by a freelancer. Then I realized that there were several add-on activities I could purchase that would make the final result for what I wanted even better.
Today, Fiverr has become a very competitive marketplace. It has developed way beyond design and now includes video talent, voiceover actors, programmers, and virtual assistant time. Some of the most interesting offers I’ve seen on Fiverr include people willing to walk around holding a sign as your human billboard and editors who will review your resume.
The success of Fiverr is largely attributed to its referral program. Currently you can share Fiverr with someone and earn $5 when they spend their first $10.
Behind the scenes, the Fiverr team is encouraging inner city kids to develop career skills and helping them access technology. In an article on Adage.com, the Director of Marketing for Fiverr launched a design contest to help teach these youth the tech skills they need. The winning entry was to be displayed on over 300 subway platforms throughout New York (Adam Swart, F, 2015).
The best way to understand the Fiverr community is to try it out for yourself. You may decide that you have a special talent that you would like to promote as a gig. Becoming a Fiverr gig provider can offset the cost of gigs you would like to purchase.
One holiday season, I jump-started a campaign with Fiverr, quickly spending $200 on gigs. The result was a wide range of interesting content created for my campaign: YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest, and blog posts.
I wish you luck as you evaluate this unique opportunity to grow your visibility for your product, service, or marketing campaign.
